Tufts unveils cells that could reduce cultivated meat costs

Beef cells produce growth factors, could significantly reduce media costs.

Tufts University Center for Cellular Agriculture on Friday announced that its researchers have created bovine muscle cells that produce their own growth factors, which could significantly cut media costs associated with cultivated meat production.

The cells, which are modified stem cells, produce their own fibroblast growth factor (FGF), which triggers cells to differentiate and mature into skeletal muscle cells.…
