It was a very tough year: 2023 in alt-meat retail

The combined refrigerated and frozen plant-based meat alternatives categories generated $102 million at retail in the five-week December month. Sales losses remained in the double digits for all three measures of sales, dollars, units and volume, in the Circana point-of-sales data for the conventional multi-outlet channels (grocery, mass/supercenter and club). Unit and volume declines are starting to slow a little, as illustrated by comparing December to the full calendar year.
